A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's flagship government projects.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the head of state.
The official reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the prior year. This project was closely associated with his leadership's strategic goals for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The building of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, beating expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised persistent apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party called for an prompt pause in the development and management of all such projects.
This pause was requested while awaiting a thorough technical review. The party declared that the situation "calls for immediate answers."
In reaction, the national leader insisted that the train had been running in total adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and operation of these vital projects.
