Crew Member Shares Emotional Distress Following ‘Tsunami of Harassment After Historic Trip
A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her battle with depression after being subjected to a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission in April, which also featured celebrity crewmates.
The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash overshadowed her achievement under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” the astronaut shared in a public message, describing a check-in call from a mission companion in the aftermath of the flight.
She characterized the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she confessed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
The researcher, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and operated research during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – from her studies and extensive preparation to the historic significance of her heritage – was drowned out under the tide of gendered attacks.
She is most acclaimed for her tireless campaigning fighting for justice for survivors of assault.
Her own goal of reaching space was put on hold after being assaulted during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.
The Fog Begins to Lift
In the time since fulfilling her dream, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she thanked the followers whose kindness were her lifeline. “Your support rescued me,” she affirmed.
She concluded that even with the backlash, considerable good had come out of the flight, such as spotlight on her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.
