The artist has given the complete sum of his £25k award winnings to the Music Venues Trust, which operates to protect the United Kingdom's small music venues.

The star was presented with the award on 16 October as his latest record People Watching was chosen as the outstanding release of the past year.

He has decided to hand the money over to the MVT, in appreciation of the vital role small stages played in his initial steps.

"I wouldn't be doing this success if it weren't for all the performances I played around the area, and further afield, when I was beginning," said the artist. "These spaces are legendary, but they are facing challenges."

Since the start of 2023, over 150 of these venues have ceased operations – approximately one-sixth of the whole industry in the UK.

In the last year, top acts including Pulp, Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all aided the MVT in its efforts to support the industry, by including a minor surcharge to their ticket costs, which goes to help local stages.

Fender also took part, raising in excess of £100,000 on his live tour to assist numerous local spots across the UK.

The money supported spaces that were dealing with possible closure due to difficulties stemming from floods, blazes and bereavements, as well as permit problems, conflicts and noise complaints.

Other venues obtained funding support in improving infrastructure and technical equipment that positively impacted artists and fans.

"The notion that money from concerts in big venues backs the local stages, where it begins for artists like me, is just sensible," Sam Fender has stated.

The musician is not the first artist to donate his award prize money to good deeds.

Back when Pulp earned the prize in 1996 for their release the album, lead singer the singer announced that the band would donate their cash to the organization the charity.

During 2002, artist she shared her prize across several good causes, including the NSPCC and a charity for Sickle Cell.

"I also gave a grand to Highgate Newtown, to their gymnastics program, because I trained in gymnastics when I was younger and they required updated gear," the artist shared with outlets.

In recent years, Ezra Collective donated their prize money to the youth organization that nurtured their band, alongside other local music groups.

And the 1994 recipients M People gave their winnings to a MS organization after a acquaintance was diagnosed the illness.

"Winning was ample," remarked artist the singer. "The prize was the cherry on top but we didn't need the bonus, because we had the main prize. So our winning touched another person's life."

Last week, the trust revealed it had protected a couple of small stages in that region, by transferring them to public stewardship.

One venue in the city and the second in the city were purchased under the Own Our Venues program, which is funded by the arts council and music fans who purchase "stakes" in the properties.
