An extensive extended journey circling the Land Down Under was terminated days after the fatal incident of an elderly female passenger who was left behind by the ship on a distant island.

The passenger had been walking on Lizard Island with other travelers from the cruise ship, but broke off from the group for a rest. The liner sailed away leaving her and came back after some time after the ship staff realised the passenger was missing.

A major rescue mission discovered her person the next day.

Officials are investigating the event, in coordination with law enforcement and the state coroner.

Chief Executive of the shipping company said that travelers and staff on the ship were told that the remainder of the journey had been cancelled due to the "tragic passing and prior mechanical issues".

In a statement, he further stated that guests would be provided a total repayment, and said the operator was working "to arrange the return journeys of the passengers via private aircraft".

Regulatory bodies also issued an revised statement, and said they had "issued a directive to the Master" banning any additional guests from getting on the liner.

The spokesperson said that they would inspect the vessel in Cairns upon its arrival.

Sequence of Events

The vessel initially left the coastal city on 24 October, and was merely two days into the expedition at the point of the 80-year-old's death. The remote island was the initial destination on the voyage.

Passengers on board - who usually pay substantial amounts of money to participate in the expedition - were taken there for a shore visit with the choice of trekking or underwater exploration.

Relatives Statement

The daughter of the victim said that her relatives was "shocked and distressed that the liner left the location after an planned outing without my mother".

Via her announcement, she characterized her parent as an "vigorous octogenarian" who was a member of a bushwalking group.

"Based on limited information we have been told, it looks that there was a lapse of responsibility and ordinary reasoning," she stated.

She continued that she wished the investigation would be able to identify what "the operator should have done that might have saved Mother's being".

"We understand from the investigators that it was a very hot day, and mother became unwell on the mountain ascent," she explained.

"Officials suggested her to go back, alone. Then the ship sailed away, reportedly without doing a headcount.

"At some stage in that process, or not long after, mum passed away, by herself."

Operator Position

In a statement, the CEO affirmed that the operator was "collaborating extensively with investigators to assist their investigation".

He said that the firm was "deeply sorry that this has occurred" and had offered its total backing to the relatives.

Maritime Business Procedures

The vessel accommodates up to a hundred twenty guests with 46 personnel, according to company data. It was purpose-built to enter isolated areas of Australia's shoreline and is fitted with "tenders" - small boats used to ferry individuals on shore trips.

Events like this are infrequent, and passenger vessels have procedures to document which individuals are getting on or getting off, according to industry experts.

"Sneaking ashore or [back] onboard really isn't an possibility," an authority commented.

Cruise lines regard these processes very seriously and have "advanced technology in place to prevent such events from happening," the expert continued.

"This seems to be most likely a shocking - and sad - isolated incident."
