In a first day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reimagine” the metropolis, declaring “a different age” and an bold beginning to his term.

A Historic Mayor

The young political star, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A opportunity of this kind comes rarely and rarer still is it that the citizens whose grasp the controls for transformation,” Mamdani stated.

Ignoring suggestions to be modest, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will lead expansively and audaciously.”

Steering by Democratic Socialist Ideals

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his core beliefs. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not forsake my ideals for worry of being called radical,” he said to loud cheers.

The swearing-in was a two-part event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a old subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's election as a victory over the status quo.

An Ambitious Blueprint

Mamdani now faces one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a platform promising:

• Universal childcare
• Free buses
• A rent freeze for about 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion expense of these programs may pose a hurdle to fund. Mamdani has pledged to tax more heavily the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing Political Challenges

The new mayor must contend with apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past tweets.

Mamdani has sought to ease these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was described as unexpectedly productive.

The Fundamental Challenges of Governing

Ultimately, New York mayors are judged on their success in providing city upkeep: sanitation, curbing the rat infestation, fixing roadways, and making sure reliable subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's public safety record, citing historically low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a quirky warning about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his address with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
