Users Stopping Anti-Obesity Injections Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that individuals who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a leading health publication points out that while overweight people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Individuals purchasing these drugs must be aware of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.

Comparing Approaches

The study, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

The team note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally see a more gradual weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Doctors believe the way of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Condition?

Health authorities suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Experiences

Individuals who have stopped the medication describe a sudden return of hunger.

"It felt as if a switch flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," said one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, experts caution that while the jabs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success relies on combined behavioural management.
