The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in employing video review technology.
Replay technology will make its debut at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.
Competitors are granted the right to contest certain calls from the chair umpire, echoing the system currently in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
The new system will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This move arrives only a year after the AELTC introduced ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine other decisions, such as:
- If a ball has bounced twice.
- If a shot touched an rival's racket or body during play.
- Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.
Importantly, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.
Case in Point
An illustrative example occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."
The umpire viewed a video and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.
Other Changes
Another innovation at The Championships this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This solves situations where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was in or out.
Finally, with precisely 100 days to go until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
